Q780. 1st Class Iron Tsuba Signed Myochin Ki no Yoshishige

$750.00

Q780. Mighty fine iron tsuba. 7.6 x 8.2 x .4 cm at the raised rim (.3 cm at the seppa-dai). The nakago hitsu-ana is .8 x 2.7 cm.  Myochin Ki no Yoshishige. The myochin School began work as armor makers and took up tsuba and kodogu along the way; Yoshishige was a smith in the school in the 19th century.

There is a partial wheel sukashi and a very bold punched out dome. At first I thought the dome was ringed with brass inlay on the concave side but it was pointed out that this is light reflecting off denser iron, upset in the punching process. There are tekkotsu on the rim and also on the plate, some quite prominent. and to top it off, the tsuba has been given a yakite (partially melted) surface, giving it a luscious deep black patina. There is a lot to appreciate here; this one is special. Was $950, now $750.
