T565. Unusual Tachi Tsuba

$365.00

T565. Tachi tsuba. 7 x 7 x .5 cm at the rim. The nakago hitsu-ana is .7 x 2.9 cm. The plate is yamagane – native copper – with a dark patina. One side is concave and is inscribed with 4 kanji that a former owner translates as, “Continued luck in fortunes of war.” The other side is a stylized chidori (plover) over waves. For the text to be readable this would have to be mounted on a tachi: long blade worn edge down. The atypical shape of the ryo-hitsu also indicates an earlier piece, I believe. There are numerous shallow dings and dents on the mimi; this one has been around a while. Interesting. Was $465, now $365.
