Q880. Umabari. Horse Knife
$295.00
Q880. Umabari. 13.3 x .8 x .2 cm. Umabari are somewhat rare. They are meant to be mounted in a sleeve on the side of a saya (scabbard) much like a kotsuka/kogatana would be but, rather than a letter opener or pen knife, umabari have a different use. If you are riding a horse long and hard, blood can pool in the bottoms of the horse’s legs and slow your progress. The umabari was used to bleed the horse’s legs to relieve pressure and continue the ride (at least that is my understanding; I’m no authority). Two symbols are inlaid in silver: one may be a flower, no idea fr the other. Great condition. $295.
