H481. Iron Tsuba with Gold Eyed Dragon, Higo
$395.00
H481. Iron tsuba. 7.6 x 8 x .45 cm on the raised rim. The nakago hitsu-ana is .9 x 2.8 cm. Here we have another fine tsuba from the Holbrook collection. A dragon with gold inlay eyes has been carved on either side of the plate and there are remnants of gold inlay and a geometric design on the kaku-dote-mimi. Subtle tekkotsu also are found on the edge of the mimi.
This tsuba had a Hozon paper from the NBTHK, giving it to Mumei (unsigned) Higo. Unfortunately, the paper is lost but I have a picture of the paper, given to me by someone who owned this before – see my last picture. The tsuba will come with Mr. Holbrook’s collection photo. On the back is written, “Higo Jingo, chisel work dragon with remnants of geometric inlays on edge, much used & early, a classic example of this design, not sure which school, SHIMIZU.” Condition is excellent. $395.
