T437. Papered Higo Tsuba. Shakudo with Gold

$1,395.00

T437. Papered Higo tsuba, shakudo with gold fukurin and ryohitsu lining. 7.8 x 8.5 x .3 cm (thicker on the fukurin). The nakago hitsu-ana is .7 x 2.6 cm. This comes with a hozon paper from the NBTHK dated 2006 giving the tsuba to Kodai Higo (later generation, don’t stick your necks out fellas). This is obviously the work of Yoshikatsu Tsuge, a late Higo artist whose work appears in Ito Mitsuru’s book on Hayashi and Kamiyoshi. My last picture is from the book: a very similar tsuba by the artist. The shakudo is deepest black (much better than my feeble attempts to photograph it) and the gold glows. The former owner has told me that the technique is kusarikashi: the design is laid down in lacquer, the plate is acid treated, and protected areas remain raised. Incredible control no matter how this was done. Condition is excellent, like new. The tsuba comes in a fitted box with pillow. $1,395.
