B491. Japanese Swordsmiths Vol. 1 & 2 by Hawley

B491.  Japanese Swordsmiths by W. M. Hawley.  Volume 1: 1966, volume 2: 1967. Hardbound, 5 3/4 x 8 1/4″, 756 pages total in English.  These books were Mr. Hawley’s 1st attempt at a list of all Japanese swordsmiths through history.  I think between the 2 volumes you get about 10,000 smiths, catching all the important and not so important ones.  Many collectors have the 2 volume set as well as the much larger Japanese Swordsmiths Revised (see listing B711) because their smaller size makes them easy to carry at shows.

Other than the list of smiths, with signatures in both Japanese and English, dates, provinces, and relative point value, the books give you tons of information in charts, drawings, and lists (including indexes to the 1st 17 editions of Juyo Token Nado Zufu by the NBTHK).

Condition of both books is great.  2 pounds, 7 ounces.  $250.

I have a 2nd set of these books with a damaged spine of the 2nd volume – see my last picture. The binding of this book is perfectly OK but a chunk of the spine is gone. This set can be had for $150.
